Step 1: Take measurements & weight How to Measure and Weigh Your Parcel Accurate measurements and weight are essential for calculating shipping costs. Follow these simple steps to ensure your parcel is ready for collection or drop-off. 1. Gather the Right Tools Flexible tape measure – Ideal for larger or irregular parcels. Ruler – Best for small, compact items. Digital scale – To record the parcel’s weight accurately. Flat, level surface – Place the parcel on a stable surface before weighing. 2. Measure Dimensions (Length, Width, Height) Length: The longest side of the parcel. Width: The side perpendicular to the length, usually the second longest. Height: The vertical side, often the shortest measurement. Tip: Always measure using the parcel’s longest points, no matter its orientation. For boxes – Length = longest side, Width = next longest, Height = shortest. For irregular shapes (tubes, cylinders, etc.) – Measure the total length and the girth (the distance around the widest part). Always measure end to end and double-check your numbers. 3. Calculate Volume (Optional) If your courier uses dimensional weight pricing, you may need to calculate volume: Volume = Length × Width × Height Use consistent units (e.g. centimetres). Divide the total volume by 5000 to get the dimensional weight. 4. Weigh the Parcel Place the parcel on a digital scale. Record the exact weight. Remember: couriers charge based on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. 5. Consider Packaging Materials Measure the outer packaging, not just the item inside. Boxes, bubble wrap, and padding increase both dimensions and weight—these must be included for accurate shipping costs. By following these steps, you’ll ensure accurate shipping quotes and avoid unexpected surcharges.
